Chapter Three

Near the end of chapter three, Otter says to his father, "Why don't you step out from Uncle's shadow for once?"  What do you think this means?  What do you think his father's response means?

  1. Well I think Otter was trying to get his father to step up and be himself and not be a follower but, a leader. But the question i have is why does Uncle Foxfire cast a long shadow that Dad cant step out of?

  2. i think this means that otter wants his father to stop doing everything that his uncle does.

  3. I think that stepping out of the shadow of uncle means to stop doing everything with uncle. his father means that he can't step out of his shadow because he does everything so good and is hard not to follow.

  4. I think you're all correct, but why is it so difficult for Otter's father to do this? Why do you think this seems so important to Otter?

  5. I think what Otter is trying to say is that instead of following in Foxfires footsteps, Otters father should create his own footsteps and be his own person.
